On stage, the crafted trees had twisted, ominous twigs under the lights. Backstage, the students eagerly practice their parts in anticipation for another big production.

The school’s theatre department will present the musical “Into the Woods” Nov. 15-17 at 7 p.m. in the Performing Arts Center. Theatre teacher and director Genevieve Hutter has been working on this production since the end of 2017-2018 school year.

“We actually started this show early,” Ms. Hutter said. “We had auditions at the end of the last school year since the music is so difficult.”

Choir teacher Julie Ammons has been helping the students performing in the musical on perfecting their vocal parts. At the same time, she believes the students have done a great job independently practicing their lines.

“It’s fun to see my students take responsibility for learning their parts,” Mrs. Ammons said. “It’s really hard music and these kids have really done a great job.”

Students have stayed after school everyday rehearsing until 5:30 p.m. for the month of Nov. while counting down the days until the first showing of the musical.

Senior Josie Boutté plays the role of princess Cinderella and found that managing her time over the summer was difficult due to planned vacations.

“I didn’t have a bunch of time to learn it over the summer,” Boutté said. “I took a trip to Europe so that took a month away from me.”

“Into the Woods” opened on Broadway at Martin Beck Theatre Nov. 5, 1987. The musical is family friendly and contains story-book characters.

Junior Gabrielle Vaoifi earned the part of the Witch and likes the under-lining messages of the story.

“The overarching themes in it makes me so excited to do it,” Vaoifi said. “It’s really good.”

Tickets are available from any cast/crew member, the high school office or at the door. Adults are $8, students are $5, and children 5 and under are free.
