Students organize Dungeons and Dragons club

Story by Lailah Bobo, Reporter

Sophomore and leader of the Dungeons and Dragons (D&D) Club, sophomore Cody Hyatt, stands and describes the fictional scenario to his campaign group of four. They have the choice of either going up a hill to a nice house or going underwater to what seems to be a floating house. The nice house may have necessities for the group as they venture through their quest, but the floating house may also have underwater treasures. Together, the group votes to go and seek after the floating house, where the rest of their fantastic escapades will continue.

In early September, the anticipated Dungeons and Dragons Club was created by Hyatt. They meet on Thursdays during STAR Time in the library, where the club is split up into different campaign groups. The campaign groups are separated based on the type of genre that members would like to picture the scenario in. Hyatt created the club because he realized how much other students love the game and it helped him come together with others to fulfill his hobby.

“It started as a hobby,” Hyatt said. “I was introduced to it by a friend. It’s just something I like, so I talked to kids about it and the more kids I talked to. The more I realized I wasn’t the only one in the school who likes this, I got the idea that I should make a club out of it. Especially since I’ve been wanting to join a club for a long time now.”

Dungeons and Dragons is a game that was initially released to the public eye of children and teens in 1974. The game was a major hit to those with a spectacular interest in fantasy. The game had a great comeback on July 15, 2016, when the first season of “Stranger Things” had its series debut. “Stranger Things” is a science fiction Netflix original series based on the characters and the theme of D&D. People who don’t even like science fiction as an interest became obsessed with the series, which even led “Stranger Things” fanatics to play D&D.  School Librarian Ms.Paula Erickson thinks that the series has an impact on students playing the game.

“I think since ‘Stranger Things’ was a part of the D&D concept, that a lot of students will be interested in the club,” Ms. Erickson said.

The club is currently waiting to become official but they still meet during STAR Time on Thursday travel days regularly. Even though they are still unofficial, they’ve managed to get involved in this hobby and communicate in a unique way with other D&D fans. Sophomore Emma Brownlee thinks that the meetings are fun and help with communication skills.

“I like hanging out with friends and having a good time,” Brownlee said. “You get communication skills and you get to act a lot. You also get math skills because you add up the dice.”

After venturing towards the floating house, the club encounters a horrifying monster. They roll the dice which directs them to battle against the evil monster using their battle-axes. After they defeat the monster, they discover an amazing treasure of jewels. With the jewels in leader Cody Hyatt’s arms, the group goes forth to seek more adventures.
