The wrestling team scored 44 points in the duel against Lee’s Summit West and 66 points against Saint Joseph Central on Dec. 5, 2019 to start the season 2-0.

Head coach Brandon Wackerman feels that his team did a fantastic job against both teams.

“I think the team did a wonderful job against Lee’s Summit West especially since in years past we haven’t been able to beat them,” Coach Wackerman said.

Senior Josh Rieck won both his matches at the 152 weight class. Rieck was happy to keep his record going of 6-0.

“I feel like I’ve been doing pretty good so far” Rieck said. “It is my senior season and I am looking for a record like that.”

Freshman Haley Ward wrestled with the boys at the 132 weight class on varsity. She pinned her St. Joseph Central opponent in just under 1:35.

“I felt nervous going against a guy,” Ward said. “It is known that a guy is stronger and for me to go out there and win was amazing.”

Ward made her varsity wrestling debut at the Oak Park invite on Nov. 29. The St. Joseph dual marked the first time she wrestled a male in varsity competition in her career.

“Being a freshman on varsity going against a guy, she is a strong girl and helped lead us to a win,” Coach Wackerman said.

The squad will host Park Hill South in a duel on Jan. 6, 2020. The event will be live broadcast by KFOI Sports on the NFHS Network at https://www.nfhsnetwork.com/events/fort-osage-high-school-independence-mo/gam1228e13ec9.
