Step Team starts up at Fort

Story by William Rieck, Reporter

The school’s new step team started up under the direction of Coach Danita Henderson. Ms Henderson’s primary job is special education but recently decided to start a new extracurricular activity to give students a chance to have diverse activities and to step out of their comfort zone.

“I’m looking forward to seeing the team progress I also want to prepare students for college and I think trying new things will help them in the future” Ms. Henderson said

Step-dancing is a form of percussive dance in which the participant’s entire body is used as an instrument to produce complex rhythms and sounds through a mixture of footsteps, spoken word, and hand claps. After learning about the new team from her cousin senior Sulimoni (Moni) Taula quickly joined and became captian.

“I joined because I like dancing and it sounded fun to try out,” Taula said.

Freshmen Mic’kyia Watson and Semiah Madison also joined the step team and are looking forward to preforming and making friendships with other students.

“I like the idea of coming together to dance and have fun,” Madison said.

Practices take place every Monday, Wednesday and Friday after school until 3:30 p.m. in Mrs. Fulton’s room (PA6), anyone interested in joining step can talk to Coach Henderson or Team Caption Moni Taula.
