BASEBALL: Indians come up short despite late surge
April 12, 2022
Senior Nick Tinoco led the team with two hits and an RBI, including a nice hit for a solo home run in the third inning. Despite those hits, the Indians fell short to Central (St. Joseph) 9-5 on April 7.
Central jumped out to a quick 5-1 lead in the first inning on two triples and a double. They added two more in the second and then Tinoco launched his hit over the right field fence to make it 7-2 after three innings.
“It felt great,” Tinoco said. “It was like when all your hard work pays off finally. It feels good.”
Central finished their scoring in the fourth with two runs on three singles. Junior Chase Stumfoll hit a single up the middle in the fifth inning and went 1 for 4 in the game. Stumfoll believes that getting on base changes the speed of the game.
“We have lacked a lot of base runners, so getting on base and scoring a run definitely brings the tempo up,” Stumfoll said.
Senior Pitcher Brayden Nelson came into the game in the top of the fifth and shut down the Central bats by retiring nine of the 10 batters he faced, including three strikeouts. In the bottom of the seventh, the Indians surged to score two runs on two hits and an error. Left Fielder Junior Greg Menne 2 for 2 at the plate. Menne feels that the team persevered well throughout the game.
“I feel like the team did well at never giving up, and we fought the whole game,” Menne said.
Menne had three plate appearances with a single, double, and then a walk. The Indians defense had four errors throughout the whole game. Senior Xander Jones suffered the loss from the mound. The Indians had six hits total throughout the game. The Indians sit at 1-9 on the season.
