COLLABORATING. Sharing an idea, Mr. Benjamin Merithew (Center) discusses news coverage with Juniors Dylan Daugherty (Right) and Jazmyn “Jazzy” Walker (Left). Mr. Merithew resigned April 28 to take a new position at Park Hill High School in Kansas City. “I will miss the day-to-day interactions with my colleagues and students at Fort,” Mr. Merithew said. “But I’m looking forward to the opportunity to grow at Park Hill.”

Story by Samantha Purinton

Broadcasting and Mass Media teacher Mr. Benjamin Merithew walks into the loud classroom laughing where he heads to his desk to sit. He begins typing away at his computer where he begins to look at students’ stories. He calls a student up to begin making edits, where he tells them about commas and style rules.

Mr. Merithew served as the Broadcast Journalism and News Media teacher for 10 years at the school. He announced his decision to leave Fort Osage High School to take the Broadcast Journalism position at Park Hill High School on April 28. A colleague at PHHS reached out to him and asked if he was interested in the position. After researching the opportunity, Mr. Merithew decided to apply for the job because it would benefit his family.

¨When I asked about class size and budget it was too good to refuse,” Mr. Mertihew said. ¨I have to do it to better my family.¨

Mr. Merithew’s favorite memory from being at Fort is helping build a foundation for the media in the school and seeing how much they have improved. Broadcast and Mass Media student Junior Dylan Daugherty, believes that he has a good relationship with his students.

¨I really like the classroom environment we have,¨ Daugherty said. ¨He’s a good person who you can tell genuinely enjoys their job.¨

Mr. Merithew believes the students are what makes his job enjoyable. Broadcast student Junior Naomi Bernard enjoys Mr. Merithews teaching styles.

¨I’m gonna miss his teaching,¨ Bernard said. ¨Ḧe forces me to get my work done when I don’t want to.¨

The new teacher has not been decided. Mr Merithew is excited for the next opportunity.

¨I’m most looking forward to the new students,¨ Mr. Merithew said. ¨To be able to teach them and give them an opportunity.¨

When the story revisions have been fixed Mr. Merithew heads to the back computer to accept the airdrop for the multimedia. The story then gets posted to fohssignal.net where he then will tell them to share it on their social media.
