TEAMWORK. Missouri School Board Association Director for the Center of Education Safety Amy Roderick (Right Center) presents Senior Chase Stumfoll (Far Left), Junior Ava Flaig (Left Center) and Freshman Aubrey Miller (Far Right) with a check for their winning poster entry. Ms. Roderick hopes contests like the Bus Safty PSA gives students the opportunity to solve real world problems together. “We like to do this with students so it’s empowering for them to take control of their environment and promote safety,” Ms. Roderick said.

The Missouri School Board’s Associations (MSBA) ‘Show Me I’m Worth Stopping For’ contest awarded $3,000 to the Fort Osage Student Council for their PSA over bus safety. STUCO took first out of 112 submissions and Junior Class Representative Ava Flaig was excited to win.

“It feels pretty good to win,” Flaig said. “It’s good to know we made a change and that we were able to fund all this money for student council.”

Each category winner was awarded $1,500. The poster publicity committee included Junior Ava Flaig, Freshman Aubrey Miller, Senior Chase Stumfoll, and Freshman Kailey Alexander. Sophomore Lupe Yamauchi, Freshman Ryleigh Gage, Senior Macie Smith, Junior Emmah Crowe, and Senior Caden Parker created the Audio PSA. Yamauchi hopes to use the money to better the school.

“We don’t know what we’re going to do with the money yet,” Yamauchi said. “Maybe more money for the dances, decorations.”

Their winning submissions will be uploaded and broadcast by the MSBA. MSBA Director for the Center of Education Safety Amy Roderick hopes to educate drivers.

“We hope to raise awareness to new and old drivers alike that when that stop arm’s out, they stop.” Roderick said.

There are over 7 million school bus violations nationwide. The winning poster is currently displayed beside the main office. You can listen to the audio here.
