Netflix’s ‘Night Agent’ worth the watch

Story by Averi Van Winkle

The Night Agent” premiered on Netflix March 23, 2023. “The Night Agent” reached as high as rank 6th out of the top 10 TV shows in the U.S. on Netflix. It is a 10 episode series rated TV-MA.

The series genre range is impressive and keeps the episodes flowing together. The first episode opens with a tense scene and not even five minutes in there are explosions, fights and a chase scene. By the end of the first episode I was confused and on the edge of my seat. Through the whole series I found myself reaching for the remote because I couldn’t wait the 20 seconds for the next episode to start. As the episodes go by the focus shifts from the case to more of the people who are working together to solve the case. The genre flips from action to more of a romantic look. You get to see how going through so much can bound people together.

Actor Gabriel Basso does a wonderful job of portraying his character Peter Sutherland. Bassol draws you into his character’s story and makes you feel as if you truly know him. You fall in love with Peter and find yourself nervous for him whenever he is putting his life on the line. Luciane Buchanan plays the second main character Rose Larkin. Personally I did not like Rose. I found her childish and always in the way. She annoyed me with her constante damsel in distress act. She came in and tried to take over and wouldn’t even give Peter a chance to change her mind. She was stubborn and selfish, and I didn’t like her vengeful attitude towards everyone even if they were proven to be innocent. She seemed ungrateful and manipulative throughout the show.

The character development through the show impressed me, even if I didn’t like how the characters grew. You can definitely tell they are different after going through these traumatic experiences, which is good and makes it feel real. The characters and actors were well thought out and you feel connected to all of them even if they are only in a single episode. For example you meet Lorna for a short time but for that 20 minute span you learn her story and understand why she acts the way she does. Lorna was played by Gabrielle Rose and is known for her roles in The Sweet Hereafter, Maudie, and Kindsway

In the third episode another story line is thrown into the series. We meet the Vice President’s daughter and her secret service team. When they are first introduced it surprisingly wasn’t confusing. The story line flows extremely well for how fast paced the series is. Almost every episode there is a different piece of evidence or action scene but the story line stays constant revolving around Peter Sutherland and Rose Larkin and Maddie Redfield and Chelsea Arrington. Maddie is played by Sarah Desjardins who played Callie Sadecki in Yellowjackets in 2021. Fola Evans-Akingbola plays Chelsea and has had constant roles since 2018.

Seth Gordon directed “The Night Agent” and the sense of humor seen in the characters reflects on his directing. While the show is intense and high stakes, the small jokes and sarcastic comments lighten the mood. Gordon has also directed some comedy films Identity Thief and Baywatch

All these components put together in a 10 episode series makes for a thrilling watch. I was never bored, even though some scenes were predictable the show still had some good plot twists. “The Night Agent” deserves its spot in the top ten of the U.S. today TV shows. I enjoyed watching it and finished it in four days. If you’re looking for a good action show that keeps you on the edge of your seat, benign “The Night Agent”.
