The Fort Osage Highschool National Honors Society hosted Halloween Spirit Week October 26-30. The Halloween Spirit week includes activities like a Pumpkin carving contest, coloring contest, canned food drive and a brand new Virtual Haunted House that the NHS created for virtual students.

Senior Aspen Treadwell is the president of the NHS. She feels the activities will appeal to the students.

“Struggling with Covid definitely inspired some of the ideas for spirit week,” Treadwell said. “I think it will be easier and out of the way but also a lot of fun for virtual students.”

NHS held an open coloring contest with Halloween coloring pages that were collected by the sponsors Ms. Kassandra Gravley and Dr. Heidi Dailey. As for the canned food drive, students can drop off canned goods in Ms. Gravely’s and Dr. Dailey’s rooms. Senior Chirstina Shoen enjoys the opportunity to show her school spirit.

“I love spirit week,” Shoen said. “I will more than likely be participating in the rest of the week,” she said, “I really enjoyed the Homecoming Spirit Week and that really inspired me to participate in this one.”

Although this Halloween Spirit Week took place during the  hybrid and virtual  learning, students could dress up all five days. The themes for the days of the week include Athlete vs. Mathlete Monday, Twin Tuesday, Wacky Wednesday, Thriller Thursday and Freaky Friday.

Mr. Chris Early has been teaching at Fort Osage High School for 14 years and has seen all the spirit weeks in that time. He picks and chooses which ones to participate in based on the theme.

“I usually only dress up for spirit week if I like the theme or not,” Mr. Early said. “I dress up and participate as much as I can but last time was my favorite because I’m pretty sure I got to wear pajamas.”

The food collected during the virtual Halloween week will go to local food pantries to help those in need.
