Pierce the Veil is a pop punk band from San Diego, formed in 2006. It was founded by Victor and Mike Fuentes after their previous band, Before Today, broke up earlier that year. They then released a song called “Currents Convulsive” on June 19, 2007. Later that month, they released their first album, “A Flair for the Dramatic,” which included their first song, “Currents Convulsive.” Most people aren’t the biggest fans of this album; I, for one, am a huge fan of this album. The song “I’d Rather Die Than Be Famous” is my favorite song on this album. I found it to be very heavily-emotional and calming throughout the song. Vic changes the intensity of his voice to reflect emotion.
By 2012, the band had released two more albums: Selfish Machines in 2010 and Collide with the Sky in July 2012. I feel that these albums are both great, but they have pros and cons. For example, Collide with the Sky features a song called “Tangled in the Great Escape,” featuring Jason Butler. This song is probably the most problematic song among the Pierce the Veil community; some people like it, others don’t. Some listeners felt Jason Butler’s presence on the track was not needed, with one fan stating, “Jason Butler was really unnecessary on that track.” I personally feel that Fuentes and Butler’s voices don’t go very well together, and it’s not the best track on this album. However, I did really enjoy “Hold on Till May” on the Collide with the Sky album.
In 2017, Mike Fuentes took a break from the band due to some allegations spreading about him in the media. In 2020, Vic clarified that Mike left the band in 2017 and would not be returning. Fans were surprised to see him go and were upset that they didn’t share anything about the allegations sooner. I personally feel it was a great decision for him to leave the band, allowing Vic and the rest of the band members to continue putting out music without the drama.
Years later, after the COVID-19 pandemic calmed down, the band released The Jaws of Life album in 2023. This included songs like “Pass the Nirvana” and “Flawless Execution.” I found this to be an amazing album, with my favorite song being “Death of an Executor.” I think it’s a pretty emotional song. I feel like the song can relate to depression or going through a difficult time in someone’s life. Vic said in an interview that the album was about “fighting your way out of a dark, consuming period in life, like being trapped and devoured, and clawing your way back to the light.”
This year, the band started their I Can’t Hear You World Tour on May 13th in Charlotte, North Carolina. It will end on December 16th in São Paulo, California. This tour features two openers, Sleeping with Sirens and Beach Weather, on the US part of the tour. I went to the June 8th show in Maryland Heights, MO, at the Hollywood Casino Amphitheater. The band played many songs from their A Flair for the Dramatic album, including “Yeah Boy and Dollface” and “I’d Rather Die than be Famous.’ They haven’t played many songs off this album since their Misadventures tour in 2017. I thought this was an amazing concert full of amazing energy. It did start raining, though, but that did not stop the fun throughout the venue. Overall, I think Pierce the Veil is an amazing band and I can’t wait to see what they do in the future. I would highly recommend check this band out on the Spotify app or wherever you get your music.
