Salamasina takes Center HS chess championship

Evan Salamasina won the Center High School Chess Tournament on March 11, 2023. Evan played five games and won all five. Salamasina loves making moves that his opponent doesn’t see.

The moment when they go from calm to worried is hugely rewarding,” Salamasina said.

Salamasina has won 4 tournaments this year. Current sponsor Ms. Jessica Dudley loved that Salamasina was offering help and being a good sport to all of the competitors.

“I was excited to see Evan supporting Fort Osage,” Ms. Dudley said.

Salamasina also led the tournament in Cumulative(Cum) score with a 15.0. Salamasina has never drawn in his chess career.Former chess coach Dr. Pam Lingelbach believes Salamasina is dedicated to learning more about the game.

“He has a remarkable talent for learning about chess tactics online and through reading books about it,” Dr. Lingelbach said.  

Salamasina has only played chess for a year and a half. He believes his dad is his biggest mentor.

“My dad inspired me to play since he was a grandmaster and I thought that sounded cool,” Salamasina said.

Local Investment Commission(LINC) supports schools in the area by furthering the kids education or improving life skills. LINC sponsored all of Salamasina’s chess tournaments.
