NEW RECORD. Focusing on the catcher’s glove, Senior Alexis Smith pitches to a William Chrisman batter. The Indians beat the Bears 6-0 on Sept. 20, 2022. “It felt really good,” Smith said. “Once we realized we could beat the record we changed our perspective and I think that is what helped us.”

The Fort Osage Softball team won 21 games this season breaking the previous record of 19 wins last year. They also went undefeated against their conference. Coach Kelly Sullivan thought this year was special.

“Winning conference is a pretty big feat,” Sullivan said. “It was a pretty big goal and we were glad to accomplish it.”

The girls placed second at the GKC tournament and it was their first appearance in four years.

They played Liberty high school in the tournament and won 10-0. Coach Sullivan was a little bummed when Liberty made it to state.

“It was a little disappointing that Liberty made the state, especially since we knew we could beat them,” Coach Sullivan said.

Senior pitcher Ayianna “Anna” Morton struck out 84 batters in 14 games this season.  Morton’s favorite moment was creating a music video in a rain delay. Anna loved all the fun she had with her teammates this season.

“I’ll miss the friendships and the fun we had during the season,” Morton said.

Senior pitcher Alexis Smith led the team in ground ball percentage with a 49.22 percent and was second in earned run average (ERA) with a 3.1 ERA. Smith enjoyed the fun moments she had with her teammates.

“I loved the bus rides with the team this year, it created good bonding moments,” Smith said.

Coach Sullivan has coached for 25 years, 13 of those with the Indians. The girls ended with a 21-9 record.

“The girls were in it to win it, and it was quite the treat to coach them,” Coach Sullivan said.
