Story by Jordyn Gates, Reporter

On Nov. 19, Mr. Tim Dial-Scurggs had his Current Event students present their projects in the library.

The students were assigned to pick an important current event topic. They were given a book about the subject they picked and were told to do a project over the main problem discussed in their book.

Seniors Bella Gilmore and Emma James feels like more awareness over the LGBTQ+ hate crimes should be happening. Their advice for being able to help is to “educate, respect, stand up and promote”.

“I feel like it’s just something we don’t learn much about in school and our first way we could spread awareness is to educate people,” Gilmore and James said.

Seniors Tessa Reever and Harley Hufford picked the topic of sexual assault. They believe more people should be discussing the issue.

“The biggest reason why sexual assault isn’t on every news feed is because when it happens people don’t wanna talk about it,” Reever and Hufford said.

Senior Mallory Harp believes that more should be done about the criminal justice system. She read a book about a lawyer founding an organization called “The Equal Justice Initiative” and they all work to exonerate death row prisoners.

“People are being wrongfully accused and having sentences that aren’t necessarily fair,” Harp said.

Other very important topics that were discussed were special needs awareness and immigration.
