CALMING PRESENCE. Being attentive, Chewie, a labradoodle mix, watches students walk by during passing time. Chewie was trained to be an emotional support dog to aid Ms. Deanna Rymer in her social work at the school.

School Social Worker Ms. Deanna Rymer stands in the hallway during passing time, with Cheiwe sitting next to her. Chewie’s energy radiates throughout and she is very happy to be at the school every day. They watch all the students and staff walk by on their way to class. Students walk up to Chewie and pet her as they talk to Ms. Rymer about their day.

Chewie helps comfort those in need. According to Ms. Rymer, Chewie’s main purpose is to bring joy to the Fort family.  Students respond very positively to Cheiwe.

“I enjoy seeing Chewie at school because even when I have a bad start to my morning, when I see Chewie and I get to pet her it makes my whole day feel better,” Senior Jager Wirth said.

Chewie had to complete a rigorous two week training course with KC Elite trainer Jeremy Rinehart to become a therapy dog. Chewie doesn’t just help students, she also helps teachers.

“Sometimes teachers find my office for their “Chewie” time,” Ms. Rymer said.  “She brings joy to everyone. This year has been challenging and she brings a welcome change to the chaos.”

Ms. Rymer made a family decision to add another dog.  However, it was very important for her that Chewie was hypoallergenic because it was their intention to train her as a therapy dog. Chewie is always there to brighten students’ days, on their good and bad days.

“She makes my bad mornings better, and even on my good days I still enjoy being able to see Chewie and pet her,” Senior Annalisa Bland-Apodaca said.

The school bell rings as the last of students make their way to the classrooms. With one hand on Chewie’s leash Ms. Rymer and Chewie make their way back down to Ms. Rymers classroom to finish their day.
