The Theater program received a school record three Starlight Blue Star Awards nominations.  All schools in the Kansas City area are invited to participate by sending in their musicals, and around 5,000 students compete. The theater program submitted entries from their musical, “Freaky Friday.”they earned nominations for “Outstanding Artistic Contribution by a Student” (Taylor White – Choreography), Outstanding Actor in a Supporting Role award (Supha Yates) and Outstanding Costume Design. Senior Taylor White feels like the hard work she put in was recognized nicely.

¨I would come on days where I wasn’t even needed,” White said. “It would be kind of irritating at times, but at the same time it was all worth it.”

Freshman Supha Yates received their nomination for playing the role of Fletcher Blake. They believe the whole crew played a role in helping them get this award.

“It was a lot of work,” Yates said. “Not just for me, but for everyone. We would stay until eight on Sundays rehearsing. It was a lot of hard work, and it clearly paid off.”

The actors designed their own costumes. Senior Grant McDaniel enjoyed having their hard work recognized.

“We set a school record for the amount of nominations we got,” McDaniel said. “It was very honorable, especially to get two specific awards.”

The Blue Star Awards have been around since 2003. The students will find out if they won these awards at the Blue Star Ceremony on May 26, 2022.
